How a mature ion channel forms is, for the most part, unknown. Yet the impact of successive folding steps, early in this process, is profound. The challenge of the Deutsch lab is to uncover the fundamental principles and mechanisms governing cotranslational acquisition of local secondary, tertiary, and quaternary protein conformations that permit correct domain folding, expression, and function of the mature ion channel.
